A reflection on my ARCCC experience
As my term as President of ARCCC comes to an end, I reflect on the impact and meaningful experiences that this organization has had in my professional career, and in my personal life.
ARCCC holds a very special place in my heart. I will never forget my first experience with this organization and its acronym full of c’s! With honesty I can say that I had never been welcomed so warmly and with such kindness as when my fellow ARCCC members welcomed me at my first Communications Conference just over 10 years ago, in Edmonton, AB. I entered the room as a new ARCCC member, and a newcomer to the world of Catholic communications, and I left feeling like I had been part of the group forever.
At ARCCC I have not only met professionals in the field of communications who understand exactly how I feel as a Catholic working in communications in Canada, but I’ve also met mentors and wonderful friends. These special individuals understand the joys and the challenges of the job. They have shared their experiences, offered their support and invited me to share my own talents and ideas in return.
With time, I was invited to join the executive board of ARCCC. I was afraid and hesitant at first as I was unsure whether I would be able to engage effectively due to the time constraints of my job; I also questioned how I would make a meaningful contribution to the organization. With the great support of my peers on the board I assumed my responsibility as VP for the Central Region, and it is a decision that I will never regret.
I leave my term with true excitement for the plans and goals that we have set for this organization, yet with an equal sense of concern for the future of ARCCC. Our board needs people. We need people who love and value the organization, people who are invested in Catholic communications and who care about the future of ARCCC. We need individuals who are ready to share a little bit of their time with a phenomenal organization, one that is now being called to grow, evolve, adapt and rise to meet the demands and realities of our times.
Without your help, the future of ARCCC is in jeopardy. I urge you to think seriously about volunteering to seek election to our executive this spring. We need you! You can write me directly if you would like to run for office, or even to ask any questions. I’ll be happy to fill you in.
It has been an honour and a joy to serve in the executive of ARCCC. I have learned a great deal from all those who have collaborated on the board over these 10 years, and more so, I have made wonderful friends. Men and women who have been there every step of the way, and I know they will be for years to come. My sincere gratitude to all of you.
